Homecoming Show - Oct. 19, 2012 Bobby G with Mike Riccio
Had the opportunity to revisit some of the songs that were played on WCWP in the years that I was Program Director and Mike Riccio was Music Director ( 68 - 70 ). At the time, Mike would have literally one thousand calls during his Saturday night show. We were supplied with a constant stream of new LPs and singles each week. We needed 3 or 4 people to answer the phones. I usually checked out the 40 to 100 plus LPs that arrived each week for progressive rock and Mike would go through the singles with his "Magic Ears". We had the chance last Sunday to play some of the WCWP survey songs. Eventually, WABC and WMCA which were still rockin' (WINS 1010 AM switched to all news before I started college) played some of these artists listed below.
I have saved several dozen hand-written letters from listeners back then . It was truly a different time and world. There were only 7 TV Channels in NYC and limited popular music available on the AM dial. Do you remember any of these songs?
Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom
Reflections of My Life - Marmalade
Will You Be Staying After Sunday - Peppermint Rainbow
Take Me in Your Arms - Jefferson
Baby It's You - Smith
Black Pearl - Sonny Charles
Toast and Marmalade - Tin Tin
Eres Tu - Mocedades
One Tin Soldier - Coven
Reach Out in the Darkness - Friend and Lover
We played all these before anyone else did "back in the day"!

We like to tease eachother about our musical differences. Mike was instrumental in suggesting this theme and I thank him. Finally, I would like to plug the Oldies Board that Mike chairs - you can check it out at www.oldiesboard.com - There have been over 1 million hits to that website. Counting Up and Down with Bobby G airing 9/7/12
Hi all, I have been working on a theme with numbers that count up or down. Mike Riccio steered me to the OldiesBoard.com a couple of months ago on the posted theme. (For example: Songs that count up like 1 2 3 by Len Barry or songs that countdown like twenty Five Miles by Edwin Starr.) Got some other variations on the theme as well - Did you know Joe Walsh has recorded Funk #s 48,49, and recently #50! Yup. gonna play them!! It's airing FRIDAY ( a rare Friday Rock Show for me ) on Sept. 7th as Jamie Mazzo switches with me so she can be in Baltimore that night to see the Yankee game. Hope you can listen.

Bobby G on the Storm of July 18 Part 2
About 5 pm I was still in my car on the way to WCWP and finally made it to Northern Blvd. The traffic light was working but any cars turning south on Glen Cove Road had to turn into the shopping center because there was no cars getting through the 4 feet of water in front of Dunkin" Donuts. It took 30 minutes to cross the intersection and cover a distance of 100 yards. Northern Blvd. was as bad as Glen Cove Road but there were no live wires that I saw. As I got to the campus, the rain was letting up as I parked by the library - the campus perimeter road was underwater too. At 6 pm, I walked in the station and said hi to Dan, the station manager and deadpanned, "I'm glad I left early so I could kill time reading my book."
Dan was in and out but we couldn't get the necessary connection to carry the promised concert with Jim Dawson. I did a show with the things I planned to do from 7 to 7:30 and explained to disappointed listeners over the air what was going on with the weather around the station. I called my youngest daughter at home and nothing was a problem there she reported as I played my CDs. I always carry extra material with me and put together the rest of the two hours while Dan worked and kept me company until about 8:45. (The concert was recorded by Scott Perschke and Tony Traguardo and will air August 1 with Scott hosting and Jim calling in on that Wednesday).
Going home was no problem and Thursday I arrived at the station with no problems to fill in for Bernie Bernard. I opened with "Portable Radio"by Hall and Oates and mentioned tongue in cheek that it was the only way for some listeners to hear us in the dark near or on the Post campus. My prepared show for the night was rolling along until about 8:10 when we lost power and were left sitting in the dark. The lights came back on a few seconds later but the board and computer take a minute or two to boot up. I had just finished a EAS (Emergency Alert System) Test in the last half hour and gotten new info to read over the air from Christina Kay, fellow DJ and Dan's assistant, about what would be open/closed for Friday on the campus. Some buildings had power and others didn't. I got a great deal of help from Jett Lightning and Jay Elzweig who helped copy updated material and made phone calls, etc. (Thanks guys!) Also, special thanks to Zack Parker for getting a bunch of technical problems solved and giving live updates on the air on my show as well as on the Grooveyard with Scott Perschke later.
I know we provided a service to the college and immediate area because I was getting lots of e mails from listeners as the night moved along. I hadn't had as much activity as a broadcaster in a very long time. I showed Scott my phone e mails from Facebook that night right after Zack did an second update. I was happy to have had a great group of people working with me and knowing people were listening.

P.S. - I am going to think twice before playing "Portable Radio" again!

Bobby G on the July 18th Storm
I was looking forward to a relaxing afternoon on my drive up to LIU-Post and hanging out for a while before going on the air at 7 pm. for my Wednesday night shift at the radio station. I wanted to get there really early because we were doing a live remote from Port Washington of a concert with songman, Jim Dawson. I even bought a book to read if it was really quiet. I walked my dog, Romeo and spoke to Janine, our nice station secretary while doing so. I told her I was leaving extra early to help out the station manager, Dan (if I was needed).
I left Bayside at 4 pm. Traffic was slow, then really slow on the Long Island Expressway. It started to rain so I was glad the dog had been walked before the predicted thunderstorm hit. Boy. did I feel smart. What good timing! I exited at Glen Cove Road about 4:20 figuring another 10 - 15 minutes tops to get to WCWP. Five minutes later all hell broke loose. Trees started to come down blocking traffic in both directions as the storm got really strong. Up ahead both lanes came to a complete stop. A car in the right lane had a live wire on top of it and the car right next to it had a tree on top of it. I turned on my cell phone and called 911. I was 20 or so cars behind the standstill. The operator came on and I told her we needed the fire dept. and/or the police to come. Cars started to drive in and out of a gas station one at a time to get around the 2 stopped cars. The operator said she would call right back. As I got right on top of the 2 damaged cars a police car cut in front and the officer got out and waved me on as a fire truck came from the opposite direction. The operator did call back and I told her I was waved on and that EMS was also coming.
I felt lucky that I wasn't the one trapped in the car. I drove a little further and trees came down on both sides of the road leaving one lane for 4 lanes of traffic. All the traffic lights were out north of the Expressway but no more accidents yet. About a mile before Northern Blvd. all traffic was made to turn left into a residential area. I hoped in wasn't a loop with no exit. Up ahead as I turned I saw several cars in 3 to 4 feet of water near the Dunkin' Donuts. I sometimes stop in there and pick up donuts for the college students who do a sports show from 6 to 7. That wasn't going to happen this Wednesday - sorry guys!
